The Big Fix — Fairbury & Jefferson County

Event Date: May 2026

Location: TBD

For years, Fairbury and communities across Jefferson County have struggled with a growing outdoor cat population. This spring, we’re taking bold, compassionate action. The Beatrice Humane Society, in partnership with regional rescue and veterinary allies, is launching The Big Fix — Fairbury & Jefferson County, a large‑scale Trap‑Neuter‑Return (TNR) event designed to make a measurable impact on outdoor cat populations across the county.

Our goal is simple and powerful:

Every $80 raised = 1 cat altered, vaccinated, and ear‑tipped.

We will schedule only as many cats as the community funds, ensuring every dollar directly translates into lifesaving, population‑stabilizing impact.

Why TNR Matters for Jefferson County

Trap‑Neuter‑Return is the most humane, effective, and sustainable method for managing outdoor cat populations. Instead of removing cats—an approach that simply invites new, unaltered cats to move in—TNR stabilizes colonies and prevents future litters.

TNR leads to:

  • Healthier cats through vaccinations and basic medical care
  • Reduced nuisance behaviors like yowling, roaming, and spraying
  • Fewer kittens born outdoors, reducing suffering and shelter intake
  • Long‑term population stabilization without the “vacuum effect”
  • A safer, healthier community for pets, people, and businesses

With enough community support, Fairbury and Jefferson County can become a model for rural, humane population control.

How You Can Help: Fund a Cat, Change a Community

This event is 100% donor‑funded. Each cat costs $80 to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and ear‑tip. Donations will be accepted through Jefferson County Gives, day of giving on March 19th, 2026, or through the zeffy platform below.

Your donation directly determines how many cats we can help.

  • $80 funds 1 cat
  • $160 funds 2 cats
  • $400 funds 5 cats
  • $800 funds 10 cats
  • $1,600 funds 20 cats
  • $4,000 funds 50 cats

Whether you sponsor one cat or an entire colony, your support creates immediate and lasting impact.

Get Involved: Community Training Sessions

Before the event, we’ll host hands‑on educational sessions to empower residents to safely and effectively trap community cats.

Participants will learn:

  • How to safely set and monitor humane traps
  • Best practices for preparing cats for surgery
  • How to schedule appointments
  • How to access loaner traps and supplies

Training dates and locations will be announced soon.

Together, We Can Transform Jefferson County

This event is a major step toward long‑term population stabilization—and it only happens if the community rallies behind it. Fairbury and Jefferson County have the opportunity to lead the region in humane, data‑driven animal welfare.

Your donation today ensures that more cats receive care, fewer kittens are born outdoors, and our communities move toward a healthier, more compassionate future.
